Funnel Cake
Equipment
- 12-inch skillet
- Deep fat thermometer
- Funnel with 1/2-inch spout
Ingredients
- salad oil about 3/4 inch deep in skillet
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 3/4 cup milk
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 egg
- powdered sugar
Instructions
- In a 12-inch skillet over medium heat, heat about 3/4 inch salad oil to 370°F on a deep fat thermometer (or heat in an electric skillet set at 370°F).
- Meanwhile, in a medium bowl with a wire whisk or fork, mix the flour, milk, baking powder, salt and egg.
- Holding a narrow spouted funnel (1/2-inch spout), close the spout with your finger and pour a scant 1/4 cup batter into the funnel.
- Over the hot oil, carefully remove your finger to let the batter run out in a stream, while making a spiral about 6 inches in diameter.
- Fry 6/8 minutes until golden brown, turning once with tongs. Drain well on paper towels.
- Repeat with the remaining batter; stir well before pouring.
- Sprinkle the cakes lightly with powdered sugar. Serve warm.
Notes
